Most of the churches we’ve seen on this trip have been Baroque in style, but on our way out of Trier, we stopped to see the city’s famous Rococo church.
This is the St. Paulinus Church, which looks very simple, albeit elegant, from the outside. Only the ornate doorway gives a little hint of the amazing decor inside.
These beautifully preserved churches are amazing, not only for the craftsmanship and the talent they display, as well as all the years in the making, but I am also in awe of the idea of the wealth and power of the church in those times, when it was also the center of government.
Here you see my little munchkin dwarfed by the grandeur of it all.
And then we left for Weilerswist and my cousin’s house. Here Kallie is getting a tour of the garden when we arrive. If I can manage the techno piece when my husband leaves this week, I will have many more garden photos to come! Wish me luck on that!
Well, if it ain’t Baroque, don’t fix it!
Seriously, though, I love the facade of this church– it’s so very elegant. And speaking of the wealth of the Catholic church, have you ever been to the Vatican? Despite my many years of Catholic school and classes in Catholic history, I wasn’t prepared for seeing the popes in St. Peter’s on display like kings, dressed in jewels and fur. It was unbelievable.
Anyway, I’m enjoying your posts from Deutschland. You’ve reminded me of how they seem to have flowers spilling out everywhere you go. It’s something I miss in Texas! 😀
Lori – you could do stand up comedy! I have been to the Vatican and it’s stunning. It just leaves you breathless, and you’re right – the wealth is unbelievable. We’ve been doing family for 2 days and I don’t have any none family photos to post–I’m kinda sad … because I have the TIME to post! More tomorrow tho!
I am so enjoying your tour Diana. It is just amazing that you can post while away. It is almost like we are with you.
This is the most beautiful church. They don’t make them like this any more. So many look like pole barns.
I am amazed at the age of some of the buildings in other countries. I am happy you at least get to go enjoy them.
Lisa – I do love all the old churches. And reading about them and how long it took to build some of them, where generations of stone masons worked on the same projects.
Christine – the history is something isn’t it? It’s very humbling, really, and so nice to bring history to life.
Am following all of your travels with envy. Hope the trip is going well.
Bonnie – it’s been a blast. Some work with a 5 year old, but it’s her third trip here and we brought her sitter, so it’s not too bad. My DH left on Tuesday, so it’s just us girls for 6 days. I love it, but I am ready to get home, too, and just BE! We girls can’t figure out how to reduce photo file sizes in Picasa to post or email, so no pics from here till we figure that out. My dh and I have a mac and she has a PC, so I may have to wait to catch up with pics when I get back. I have tons of garden photos to share!
