“The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.”
–Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Oh — I am ALL about letting it rain! It is raining at our house right now. It threatened all day and I was worried that it had passed us by. It’s a nice, steady rain — the kind that melts slowly into the ground and revives the dry, brittle plants and fills up ponds and puddles for the wildlife to get a much-needed drink.
It’s hard to imagine how we were drenched and flooded last summer and we thought it would never end. This year, we thought the 100+ degree days and the drought would never end.
I guess the one thing we can count on here is extremes. When it’s good, it’s really good. When it’s bad, well…you can fill the rest of that in!
These aren’t very interesting pictures and my photo skills leave a lot to be desired here, but I just wanted to capture the WET! You can certainly SEE it, I just wish we had what Emeril calls “smell-a-vision” so you could smell it. It’s that wonderfully earthy scent of growth.
I hope the rest of my blogging friends in Austin are getting a drink — how about it? Where else is it raining in Austin tonight?
How relieving it must be to have a good soak finally. It makes, not only the the gardens, but all the places around the city that never get watered, so fresh and green when you get a useful rain.
Your glistening photos brought the scents to go with the sights.
Northern Shade — It is a relief. And I just got up to peer out the window to see if it’s still coming down. You’re right – there are a lot of places that never get a break this time of year. Sometimes I wonder how they survive without watering when I can’t grow 1 single thing outside of a watering zone!
Still no more than a spatter here. It’s my watering day, so I’m watering yet again…
I just checked a stock tank I have positioned under my gutter – it is about a third full, which equates to to hardly anything. The ground probably evaporated this before it penetrated an inch into the soil!
Still, it looks like we have more to come. And what am I complaining about, it is actually nice outside tonight!
I will take what we can get at this crunchy point.
Regards,
ESP.
Oh, lucky you. Want rain, got no rain-Grrr.
Pam – Well, Jim Spencer says up to 5 inches for our area over the next week, so surely some of that will fall on your oasis!
ESP – glad you got a little something – hope there is more to come! Just wish it’d cool off a bit!
Bob – Keep your fingers crossed. Heck – water some by hand — or wash your car! That always works for me!
The lovliest smell in the garden. Just after it’s rained. It’s raining all the time where I am at the moment. Gives me time to read up on peoples blogs.
Nathan – it is a great smell. And I’m smelling it again now in anticipation of what I hope turns out to be another rain. It is nice to be forced inside to catch up on blogs. I’ve been remiss this summer between vacations and gardening and watering! Happy reading.
Oh I’m so jealous! In south Austin, I still haven’t had a drop. I got excited for a moment this morning when the sun was behind some clouds and could ALMOST smell some rain in the distance. But alas, the sun came out yet again and stayed that way. Time to water once more. I used to totally trust Jim Spencer, but this summer, I think they are just making things up to give us hope. It’s almost laughable…NONE of it has panned out this year! He says 5 inches? Maybe we might get a sprinkle, it seems. sigh…I’m getting jaded…

It’s Monday afternoon and in my neighborhood there have been no more than a couple of drops here and there over the weekend, making promises that probably won’t be kept…if you’ve got it, Diana – enjoy it!

We finally got a good rain this afternoon, and out of nowhere, mushrooms have sprouted out on my front lawn! I’ve been enjoying this cooler weather so much that I’m afraid to check the forecast!
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderfful…I would be running out in it!

The rain really cleans it all doesn’t it? I love the rain after an extended period of dry.
Robin – I’m sure that now you’ve had some rain. We’re in SW Austin – just off of 1826 and the dead ends of Slaughter and Mopac. Where abouts are you?
Annie -So, I’m now wondering if Pam get 2 inches of rain this week, did you get more than we did in the end?
Lori – how funny, I noticed a bunch of little mushrooms, too. It’s amazing what will grow with just a little bit of nourishment!
Layanee – yes, it is cleansing to have a big rain. I just love looking out the window where everything is so fresh and GREEN looking. Back to watering pots today though, since we were dry yesterday and it’s in the mid 90s. At least it isn’t 100!
