storm

Seeds are stronger than you think!

As we felt the wrath of tropical storm Hermine last week, I was most worried about all the tiny little seeds I’d so carefully planted just a few short days before.

I had visions of them floating away down the road to the neighboring town of Buda.

Then I had visions of them simply drowning in the mud-filled beds.

And finally, I had visions of them surviving, but scattering and intermingling so that I would never know what was what.

Guess what? They liked the rain. So much so that some of them popped their little heads up in just 4 days!

These are bush beans with their pretty little copper marker made with my nifty spiffy label maker. (Do you have one? I love mine!)
And these tiny little guys are going to grow up to be Brussels sprouts.
While some of the plants are a little water-logged, many of my plants have emerged rejuvenated after the storm. This ice plant is bright and cheery.
This heavenly hibiscus loved the deep, long drink.
The Hyacinth bean vine blooms burst forth after the heavy rains.
These plants aren’t in the direct path of the rain (although we had lots of sideways rain), they loved the humidity of the storm.

Be careful what you wish for…

With 65 days of temperatures over 100 degrees and a disaster-level drought, we have been wishing and praying and yes, dancing, for rain.

We got it.

Imagine my surprise when I went to put out the trash last night at 7:15 and it started to sprinkle…then rain…then blow. I got inside just as walls of water began coming down sideways.

Moments earlier, the umbrella in the photo above was upright. It was really scary as I watched chairs and tables scoot and fly in the back yard. And then the lights went out!

Thanks goodness I am a candle fanatic. I’d planned on going to bed early to keep adjusting to the new school-year schedule, but with no light and no air conditioning, there wasn’t much else to do. I did discover that my iphone makes a great flashlight, though.

Things are back to normal this morning. The power was restored around midnight and the air came back on.

And we got .24 inches of rain.

Yeah!

A peek at Spring…

These phlox were just alive with color today, after having a lovely, rainy and cool day yesterday.  The weather forcasters were off on their projected high temp for the day by 23 degrees!  It was 42 instead of 65….the storms and hail and tornadoes they warned about never materialized.  Instead, we enjoyed a good steady rain all day.

And while it was very cold to be outside on a landscape job (my teeth were literally chattering while we were walking the yard), we needed it.  We also needed the reminder that it’s still technically winter, even if it doesn’t act like it much around here!

I know you will never tire of seeing my slowly evolving daffodil, so here she is again today – just about to open early in the morning.  Some of her friends joined her this afternoon when the sun came out and it was 69 for a while.  They’ll probably make a showing here tomorrow.  (I know you can’t wait!)
